Access

A product can hold the correct items but still be awkward if the user must move other objects first, reach through a narrow opening, or use both hands when the task normally requires one. Designers consider clearance around fingers and objects, the order in which items are used, and whether the most important items are easy to reach.

Visibility

Items hidden behind taller objects or inside deep containers may take longer to find. Orientation, height differences, open fronts, transparent areas, labels, or separated zones can help users recognize where items are located.

Questions

Which items need fastest access? What gets hidden? How much finger clearance is needed? Could orientation or separation reduce extra steps?

Stability

A product is more likely to tip when its support area is small compared with its height or when users apply force far from the base. A wider support area, lower arrangement of heavy items, bracing, or a shape that resists the direction of use can improve stability.

Load and bending

Flat spans may bend when they carry weight. Folds, ribs, layers, and shorter unsupported distances can increase stiffness. The correct solution depends on the material and the direction of force.

Questions

Where is the product supported? Which direction will the user push or pull? Where is the heaviest item? Which span is most likely to bend?

Material and joints

Material properties should match the job of each part. Stiff areas can support loads, flexible parts can bend or wrap, and layered areas can reinforce weak points. Joints usually improve when parts have enough contact area and the connection resists the direction of force.

Organization systems

Designers can group items by type, size, frequency of use, or sequence of use. Separation can make items easier to find, but too many compartments can increase size and complexity. A useful system balances order with quick access.

Questions

Which parts need stiffness or flexibility? Where will joints be stressed? Which items should be grouped? Which need their own zone?
