From Problem to Ideas

Your first idea is a starting point — not a decision.

MULTIPLE IDEASExplore more than one way to solve the same problem.
FEASIBLEAn idea must be possible with the materials and time available.
COMMUNICATEAnother person should be able to understand your sketch.

Challenge Brief
A teacher-led familiar problem
L06 · 02
Classroom Solution Mini-Challenge

Design a small tabletop holder or organizer that keeps one selected classroom item easy to find, hold, or access during class.

Examples of items

pencils · index cards · sticky notes · erasers · markers · rulers

Build materials

paper · cardstock · tape · teacher-approved simple materials

Keep the problem small enough for a rapid prototype. Physical design · no computer
Challenge Constraints
A limited first design challenge
L06 · 03

Your solution must…

stand on a tabletop without being attached to the desk.

hold or organize one selected classroom item.

keep the item easy for a user to access.

fit inside a 6 × 6 × 6 inch space (about 15 × 15 × 15 cm).

be possible to prototype with the materials and time provided.

These constraints keep the challenge Year-1 appropriate. Simple + testable
Mini-Lesson
Different ideas, not tiny variations
L06 · 04

Three versions of one idea

Same shape, same structure, only the color or small detail changes.

Three different approaches

One idea stands items upright. One cradles them horizontally. One uses folds to separate them.

GO WIDE FIRST

You can decide what you like later. First, give your brain more than one direction.

Criterion B.ii introduction Generate before selecting
Feasible Ideas
Can we actually prototype it?
L06 · 05

A feasible idea passes four checks.

Materials

Can I make it with what I have?

Time

Can I build enough to test it?

Function

Could it actually hold or organize the item?

Clarity

Can another person understand my sketch?

Feasible does not mean boring. Creative + possible

Design Studio

Three rounds. Three different ideas.

ROUND 01

Sketch

Draw one possible way the holder could work.

ROUND 02

Change direction

Use a different shape, structure, or way of supporting the item.

ROUND 03

Push further

Try the idea you would not have chosen first.

Short timed rounds keep students from over-polishing. Main studio
Peer Share
Understand before judging
L06 · 07

Use feedback that helps the designer communicate.

I can tell…

“I can tell your idea is supposed to _______.”

I notice…

“One feature I notice is _______.”

I wonder…

“A question I have is _______.”

The goal today is not to vote for the prettiest idea. It is to make each idea understandable.

Brief peer feedback Communication over decoration
Choose a Prototype Direction
One idea moves forward
L06 · 08

Select one idea to build next lesson.

“I will prototype Idea ___ because its key features are _______ and _______.”
REMEMBER

Choosing one idea does not mean the design is finished. The prototype will teach you what needs to change.

Circle the chosen idea on the printable. Prepare for Lesson 7
Exit Reflection
Ideas are possibilities
L06 · 09

Finish one sentence.

“Generating several ideas helped me _______.”

Next lesson

Students build a rapid prototype of one chosen idea and record changes during making.
